Are there any negative side effects to using a body fat monitor scale?

Hi,
I know this is an odd question because you just stand on them, but do they have any side effects?
Could someone please explain to me how they actually work, I know that your feet have to be slightly moist, why is this? does it put a current through you or something similar? Can it cause any harm to you?
